Forklift Battery Safety
The big industrial sized batteries used to power electric forklifts should be charged regularly and properly maintained. Safety procedures should always be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is very important to check fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is vital for anybody working with a lift truck battery. Full protection comprises goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect skin and clothing from leaked acid or other residue is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash post should be located near the charging area. The path to the post should not be obstructed and an injured employee must be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging place within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger must be the same amperage as the battery. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are prohibited in the vicinity of a battery and charging area. Never permit things like for example matches or lighters to be used when somebody is checking the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also needs to be correctly ventilated. The recharging method could cause fumes to be released. These fumes are both explosive and toxic.
