Fuel Storage
The smaller fuel canisters and bigger refueling tanks should be stored in another complex or building so as to be more secure. To add more safety, all areas in the vicinity should have "No Smoking" signs are clearly displayed. Ideally, the fuel tanks should be stored in a safe enclosure that can only be accessible by authorized personnel. It is important for the operator's safety, and everyone they work with, that these safety measures are strictly complied with.
The fuel enclosure itself has to be protected from vehicle impact. Utilizing retaining systems such as concrete bumpers for instance, could accomplish this task. Other retaining methods can be used. It is also vital to always have a fire extinguisher present at the refueling station. Furthermore, anybody who is operating the fueling station is required to be trained and also must be trained to effectively and safely utilize the fire extinguisher. When it comes to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration or OSHA require that everybody who is operating an industrial powered forklift or lift truck is trained properly. This training covers both the hands-on training and the classroom portion. After the training sessions have been finished, the person should be tested to be able to prove that they understand the training materials. A part of this training also includes the proper way of the refueling process of the forklift. The training also involves site-specific procedures as well as the precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they could be driving.
Medical Treatment
There must be an MSDS or Material Safety Data Sheet center located within the facility where the forklift is operating. This center would include the MSDSs for all solvents and chemicals which are utilized on site. This will also include the acid in the lift truck battery, along with the propane which is used to refuel the unit.
MSDSs sheets need to be available for all personnel at all times. If any exposure incident happens for example, the person has to be evaluated right away. If any medical attention is considered necessary, to should be given without any delay. Generally, if you are not sure if medical care is considered necessary, as a general rule; have the injury examined by a physician if you fear it is severe. Always better to be safe than sorry.
